Why Should I Use a Rug Pad?

A rug pad is typically recommended for use on carpeting, as well as hard floors.

Rug pads placed on a hard floors are an important safety consideration, as they prevent slipping hazards. A rug with nothing securing it can be as dangerous as an icy sidewalk. Providing a cushion between the rug and the floor offers many other advantages as well.

When placed on a hard floor, a pad will greatly extend the life of your rug. As dirt will accumulate in the pile of the rug, a pad between the floor and the rug will create a breathable space, keeping your rug cleaner and softer. This is critical in the prevention of premature wear. By keeping the rug padded on the hard floor, friction from foot traffic and furniture shifting is decreased, and abrasion to the rugs foundation is greatly reduced.

A pad will keep the rug in place, and provide additional sound dampening. Rugs, even with furniture on them, will still shift, slide and pucker without a pad securing them, and pad will keep the rug flat, which makes vacuuming easier.

It is not recommended that rugs be placed on thick piled carpet as the rug's foundation will stretch when weight is placed upon it. For this reason, a pad that's thin and solid is usually the best choice.

Remember, a quality rug pad enhances the appearance of your rug, prevents wear, increases the longevity of it's lifespan, provides a buffer against damaging weight and impact, and makes your rug easy to clean.
